I haven't seen the Bandit 650 in person (it's not available in the U.S., but based on the info I have seen, I think they are at least first cousins.
It doesn't bother me in the least because I have owned Bandits (600 and 1200) and a GSX600 Katana...
All worthy bikes.

I thought I had heard once that the GSX650F is the same frame as a SV650 but with a fairing and different motor. But there are many parts that are interchangable with a Bandit.
im looking to get a new bike shortly and love the bandit and the gsx with its sportier looks - from what i have heard the gsx is a bandit with a fairing although suzuki deny this
and given the selection of bolt on goodies for the bandit the gsx is definetly worth considering me thinks

I heard that the engine, susspention , gearbox , frame and taillight are the same.
Difference is the mapping of the ecu and the downpipes.
On a bandit there are 4 big pipes which give the bike more tork at low revs, the GSX have small pipes and can rev the engine more....
don't ask me why or how it works... I just have read it somewhere.
The only question is... When does Suzuki give us a GSX1250F ???

Definately not the same as an SV, but for all intents and purposes it is a fully faired Bandit 650. The only 650 Bandit iteration available in the U.S. currently. I'm pretty sure a 1250 motor will bolt right in, but I have yet to see it done. The Suzuki service manual covers both the GSX650F and the 650 Bandit, so I think that's proof that they are siblings, not cousins.

GSX650F is a bandit with a dress on from what I've seen and read
ECU is apparently retuned for more low end tork and a higher redline but who knows. Every dyno sheet I've seen on the net doesn't say that. But then again the dyno sheets could be for one and then they just put it against the other cause it's cheaper than doing another dyno run on another bike. Who knows
The bigger pipes on the bandit are just an outer chrome cover as far as I can tell. I know the 1250 bandit has a inner and outer pipe so I'm expecting the 650 bandit to be the same.
If they brought the 650 bandit to Oz I would have brought that instead of the GSX650F as it is better VFM with a centre stand and ABS available for less price than a GSX650F going by the UK suzuki site. Not saying the GSX650F is no good in fact I recon it's a ripper, just my opinion that I'd prefer the GSF650SA if it was between the 2 as I prefer the 1/2 undressed look of the bandit.

Since I've been looking for my first ever bike, I've gathered some information about bikes in this class
Here in Finland you can buy either one. Well, in 2009 there are actually four 650 models to choose from: GSF 650 A (naked version), GSF 650 SA (semi faired), GSX 650 F and GSX 650 FA (ABS version).
They share the same frame and the same engine, which however, is remapped in F and it's said to have more lower end torque and wider powerband. Top power and torque are the same however. AFAIK the pipes are the same except that F has black pipes because there's no need for chrome because of the fairing but I'm not 100% this. The other difference is that Bandit's rear suspension is only adjustable for preload and it has more old fashion tachometer (no gear indicator or change light). All new Bandits come with ABS and GSF 650 SA costs as much as GSX 650 F without ABS. Bandits come with a two-piece adjustable height seat (+/- 20 mm) just like the bigger Bandit. These above differences are between 2008 models and I've heard that 2009 Bandits are going to have a new more modern tachometer, new rear suspension (I suppose it will be the same as in GSX F) and new turn signal lights (yahoo, those old ones also found in GSX F are... well, frankly they could be prettier) and a new tail light.
What comes to 650 and 1250 Bandits, the frames are not same but they have some minor dimensional differences and they've also got some visual differences (silver/black engine etc.)
Pictures of those little Bandits below.

Me too, but I would have gone for the completely naked version. I owned a Bandit 1200 before buying the 650F and I am perfectly happy for the 650F to be thought of as a Bandit. I am half considering the Bandit 1250 ABS as my next bike...
