I am new to the forum and writing my first post, so here goes.....
I have a 2008 GSX650F and the battery does not seem to hold a charge, even when plugged into an Optimate charger. I fitted a brand new Bosch battery on it two weeks ago fired her up and went out for a blst for a couple of hours before returning her to the garage and plugging her back into the Optimate. Today I have tried starting the bike again and there is nothing at all, not even the side lights would work. I have tested the Optimate and it is working fine and I have checked the battery voltage, this is where it gets interesting with the battery only showing approximately 1.5 volts instead of the 12 volts expected. I am assuming that something is sucking the juice straight from the battery when not in use. I have now removed the battery to fully charge it and will place it back in the bike once charged to see how that works.
The bike is not alarmed so it will not be an alarm discharging the battery, has anyone got any thought's on what else may discharge the battery in such a short space of time when the bike is not in use?

Have you had the recall done.
Call dealer ,tell them your bike has a recall. Give them your VIN number ,if the recall hasn't been done ,they will fix it FREE is 20 minutes ..no matter how old the bike is ect. See if that helps.
Search "recall" on this forum.....and welcome.

1.5 volts? I dont think that is possible. Batteries should be at about 12.6 volts are higher to be considered charged (below 12.4 is too low to crank most vehicles). Sounds to me like your battery is going bad. They are usually only good for about 3 - 4 years with proper use and care (that's why most motorcycle batteries only have a 6 month warranty). I have a MotoBatt, which has a industry leading 2 yr warranty. Tappie

/Agree with sled. One other thing though, and it's probably retarded of me for even mentioning it... The dealer told me when i brought my bike that one mistake alot of people make when they lock their bike is turning the key one click to too many and leaving the parkers on over night... Obviously you'd realise them being on if it's in your car hold, and if you have a charger hooked up it shouldn't be an issue, but thought it could be worth mentioning? I've accidentally left mine on before, only for 5 miutes as i ran into the shop, so it is possible... But ya, Sled is right. There's an electrical issue there that needs to be addressed...

I can't see how a bad reg/rec could do this unless it was short to earth, but to drain the battery overnight with the key out, without affecting performance when the bike can be started? I'd be interested to know the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine at about 4K RPM for a start... I'd also be tempted to get it started and go for a ride, then measure the voltage on the battery when I returned. Then, I'd disconnect the earth lead overnight and check again in the morning.

There is a process to work through here. First off is a leak down test to see if a short is draining the current. As you seem to have a discharge issue (no sniggering at the back!) you need to addres this first. Then check voltage, voltage at 4-5k revs and generator output.
Tappie - is your electrical system standard? Any sign of tinkering anywhere? Unfortunately it might be a PITA process of elimination wire-by-wire to see if you have a leak to earth. Hope you have a good multimeter and wiring diagram?

 you making a simple problem complicated. Get a new battery. Problem solved.
His original post said he just put in a new battery. But, that is still worth checking. Take it out, and try charging it. Otherwise you have something draining it, but that shouldn't happen with a charger on it, unless, as someone stated there is a dead short to ground. It is possible that your new battery is bad. I bought one once where the dealer forgot to put the acid in it....

Even if it's a dud battery it makes sense to prove the issue now with a sensible process of elimination. No point putting on yet another new battery and fry it with an undetected short.
Disconnect the battery completely and get your Optimate on it. If the "good" light stays on* then you can go through the leak down, current and output tests. Do it in that order and good luck.
*if it does not resurect the battery then it's possibly a dud. See if you can argue a new one seeing as it's new.
