I am no expert on this topic, but I have read the replies to this same question (what oil to use in a motorcycle) in other forums. The following are my conclusions to what I have read (although I can't vouch for them).
Automotive oil without a particular type of additive (not sure of the name of the additive) will work just as well as motorcycle specific oil. If you have been using automotive oil, and it is working for you, there is no reason to stop. If you are unsure, go with the motorcycle specific oil (although it may cost more).
Racing oils do have higher tolerances, but the additives in racing oils don't last as long as as regular oils (because track bikes get their oil changed more frequently than regular street bikes). Racing oils are not recommended unless you change your oil very frequently.
Synthetic oils should be fine unless they have the automotive additive that makes your clutch slip (don't remember the name). It is recommended that you break in your engine using non-synthetic however. You may get a longer life from synthetic oils if you use an oil filter that is specially built for synthetic oils.

10W/40 Synthetic blend for me in the summer and 10W/30 for the fall and spring. I don't thing it matters which one as long as you change at it recommended intervals or sooner.

10W50 Respol Synthetic 4T Racing for me. I change around 5000 miles and willing to pay a premium for the oil. I haven't noticed any abnormal breakdown with the racing formula, shifting is extra smooth.
I did try Castrol moto oil once, didn't like the hard shifting and drained it after 1000 miles. I was going to go with Amsoil this last oil change but stuck with what works for me. I like to ride more than change out clutch plates, engines, etc.
Good luck, I've heard Mobil and Shell Rotella (blue bottle diesel) are good cheap alternatives but have never been willing to put it in my bike.

I have a semi-synthetic Lucas in my bike and i think it is supposed to be pretty much perfect. doesn't matter either way just pick a good motorcycle oil. and be wary of energy conservative oils should have a marking on the bottle either way cheers
