Ok, I'm a newbie to street bikes. I have a huge melon and need a XXXL helmet. I had to get the only one the bike store had and it is a middle of the road full face helmet. I find it very loud on the expressway. Most of the noise is coming from the bottom around my neck. If I put a hand up around the neck while at speed the noise subsides considerably.

Do they make a street bike "neck condom"? Bad choice of words, but you know what I mean.

Try using ordinary ear plugs, I find they work great to reduce wind noise in my helmet.

Same here,
When i'm gonna drive a little faster, I use custom made earplugs

When driving to work, I don't get over 80km/h (=50miles) and I like to listen to the sounds of the bike

Believe it or not, the jacket that you wear can make a considerable difference in the noise levels coming from the collar area of your neck. I have 3 different jackets and the noise levels varies on each one. It seems like the collar on the jackets is the culprit or at least part of the source.

The "Neck Condom" you speak of is THIS and it does help.

good ear plugs , balaclava , decent helmet i.e shoe 1200 , and large touring screen, this will make the trip much quieter and enjoyable . Bmw make a helmet thats almost quiet at 100km/h , costs about $1000 though.

I have never used one of those, but I do know that when I ride on cold mornings with a scarfe around my neck, the sound is reduced considerably, so I guess the neck condom should help you (hehe, I said "condom", he he  )

That is exactly what I had in my head, I just couldn't find it from the usual online motorcycle supply stores that I browse. Thanks!

I really really really don't like ear plugs. (I used them for years because of a significant other that snored badly!)

I don't like wearing earplugs either since I have a communcations system in my helmet to communicate with buddies when we ride and I need to be able to hear them. I do however wear THESE EARPLUGS since they automatically reduce the bad noise while at the same time be able to hear the ambient noise around you like traffic, your bike engine and people speaking. I would say that the amount of wind noise at 70mph was reduced enough for me to not be fatigued or distracted or cause hearing damage. The best part about it is I can leave them on while walking around and still be able to talk to people.
