I have a lot of difference between tight and loose, about 1/2 inch. Its all in the rear sprocket as it gets tight exactly the same place every rotation of the wheel. That seems like a lot to me. Whats the norm, should I replace the rear sprocket or let it go? Theres only 1500 miles on the bike so no problem putting a new one on without changing the chain. I haven't had a chain drive bike in about 25 years.

Gary

If you have to tools you can always remove the rear wheel to inspect the rear sprocket. Never heard of this problem before (on our F) and certainly not at 1500 miles.

How are you checking this, with it sitting on a paddock stand with spools or how? Never heard of this on any bike, let alone at 1500miles and I've ridden lots of bikes over the last 35 years.

I got my centerstand installed so its easier to check things out, not to mention clean and lube the chain. The rear sprocket is definatly off, still about 1/2 inch difference from tight to loose. When the chain is adjusted at the tightest point at .8 inch or so as recomended it is at the maximum play of 1.2 inches at the loosest point with bike on the sidestand. So technically its ok to run that way I guess.

On a centerstand you would need MORE chain slack then when measuring it on the side stand or paddock stand. I would strongly suggest getting the tightest spot (on centerstand) at least 1.5"

Are you shure it's not the chain that's stretched? The chain on my bike was a stretched on several points, but I also have 22k km on it.
This is pretty common on chain driven bikes.

Yea, I adjust the tension with the bike on the sidestand.

Not enough miles for the chain to be stretched. Its tightest at the same location of the rear sprocket so definatly the sprocket is off. I think I will replace it, they arent too expensive.
