Any particular brands that are superior? Or is it more of a personal preference?

Mostly a personal preference by a good middle ground and you should be good unless you have unusual habits or conditions

+1 I love this stuff. Very popular lube and for less than 5 bucks a can, it's a bargain! I have 10 cans of this sitting in my garage.

I have a scotty oiler and it works brilliant, heaps easier than having to try and oil your chain manually, there a couple hundred bucks AUD, but there well worth it, just set it to the amount of oil you want to come onto the chain and away you go.

I use this now as well. After many, many products over the years I had settled on Motul chain lube, which is GREAT- no fling- but this stuff is just as good for less $$. While I'm sure Scott oilers work well, and you never have to lube the chain again, I don't think I could stand the attendant mess from fling. Perhaps if I lived where I had to constantly ride in the rain it wouldn't matter to me, lol.

to clean;using white spirit/turps/petrol/upholstery foam cleaner (not all mixed:-)) for years i've used these then to re-oil just the oil out of your top up engine oil can/jug.
i've had about thirty bikes and only replaced two chains(due to wear & tear),never no fancy stuff but might give some of these modern tech things ago one day!

Kerosene works fine as a cleaner, and Suzuki recommends it. It cleans and lubes supposedly, but I always add some lube after cleaning the chain. I have Grunge brush with bristles in a U that makes it go fast.

I use Bean Clean and Klotz KLR Chain Lube. I have been pleased with both.

Here are some reviews about them:
