When I changed my sprocket, I was very suprised at how precise the fit was. I was almost convinced that the new sprocket didn't fit, and then, suddenly, it just slid right on! You have to line it up just right or it won't go on there...

If you do a little search time on here you can find a How to for this with fantastic pictures and step by step. It is from a Bandit but I am told its the same for the GSX too. I book marked the article on my lap top, if I dont forget I will get the thread for you. It was taken from another bike web sight. They recomend sliding a board between your swing arm and thru the back wheel to hold things in place while you bust the nut loose.
