Dave organised a ride from Westmead to Cowra back in April. He does 2 weekend car rallies, 2 week long car, 2 weekend bike, 2 week long motorhome/caravan events each year. All for charity. :D

I have helped out previously with some week long car rallies. Firstly you have to plan the route, then actually drive and plot it (over approx 2000Km of dirt roads). Usually up at 6:00am each day, stop/start driving while we take notes and finishing at the next stop around 5:00pm. During the day we would also plan stops for lunch at schools along the way (get the community involved) and also organise service clubs (Rotary etc) for breakfasts. Sometimes we would stop at outback cattle/sheep stations (ranches) and the farmers wife would rally the neighbours into helping with morning teas etc. :D

By the time we follow no-through roads for many Kms and then backtracked, we would do about 4000Km planning a 2000Km rally. :?

Having planned the route, we would then have to re-drive it some 2 months prior to the event to make sure nothing had changed and also confirm with schools, service clubs etc that they were also ok.

Then we would run the event. Nissan Australia would provide me with a Patrol 4WD to be the second "Official Vehicle" and I would be at the back of the group to search for stragglers or drag them out of mud holes.

As you can appreciate, Dave does 8 events per year and it takes a LOT of time and EFFORT to set up.

Bloody good fun !!!! :D :D :D
