I don't wear earplugs at all, but for the past week for some reason the wind noise has been excessive, even to the point that at some times it hurts which is not good. Maybe my hearing has just been a bit more sensitive over this last week, so the wind noise has bothered me more than normal.
I think I might be get a pair of plugs this weekend. Most likely I'll be looking at the ones designed for musicians and stage use. They aren't cheap (about $40), or a throw away type but they are the best available.

When I go for rides (of more than just around the neighborhood), I usually wear Hearos...They're available at Walmart, Rite Aid, etc, as well as online. According to the review of them on web bike world ( http://www.webbikeworld.com/Earplugs/hearos ), they're available at a good price in larger quantities at Musician's Friend ($9.99/40) They also say that "Hearos seem to be very popular with musicians -- the earplugs can be found on many musician supply websites."
All the best,
TTAWD

I don't have a GSX650f yet, but on my Burgman 400 I wear Spark Plug ear plugs. After trying a few, these have been the best in terms of comfort (very soft) and noise dampening. I have a Scala Q2 headset and can still hear music and phone calls through it.
I got mine at The Earplug Store http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/mosppluffopl.html You can order a small box or a large box. They're disposable, but I've been able to use the same pair several times before I have to throw them out. They do a great job of cutting out the harsh sounds, but still allow you to hear things going on around you. Highly recommended.

I wear foam ear plugs every time I ride. I try to find the foam type that have the highest db rating (hoping that means they are better than ones with a lower db rating). I have a package of hearos. Sometimes I also use the Sparkplug ear buds by KOOS to listen to my Ipod.
My friend, who visited here in Oregon on his Friends Tour from Florida told me what he uses. He uses foam ear plugs. For sound, he has flat speakers attached within his helmet. He still wears the foam ear plugs and simply turns on the music which he says comes through even better than ear buds directly from the music producing device. My Shoei 1000 has an open space where I can put them when I get around to it.

So how do you get the earphones like with an MP3 player to stay in your ears? I kept knocking them out when I tried to put the helmet on. Is listening to music while on the bike considered safe to do?

If you go to the Sydney motorcycle show they have them like half price done then and there. They do a mold of your ear and you get just normal plugs ,or wire a connector fitted for your ipod etc. I paid about $60 for the standard mold only ,but my helmet is pretty good so don't wear them much ,keep forgeting and I like to hear the bike and traffic.
