Hey: Just got an '08 GSX and wanted to check something. At 100 kph (63 mph) in 6th gear, my bike is turning 5000 rpm. Just wanted to confirm that sounds right as it seems high to me. I guess I'm used to lazier gearing. In a land where the average speed on the highway is 120-130 kph, this thing is going to be busy and sucking fuel. Thanks.

The engine is designed to be happy @ 5000+ rpm. Per 1000rpm the bike goes 20km/h in 6th gear. So @ 100km/h its 5000 rpm and @ 120km/h its 6000rpm (6200 to be exact).
Btw fuel economy doesn't suffer from it. I get 1:19-21 on highway trips when going 100-130km/h.

When I got my chain replaced on my old 250 they put a slightly smaller sprocket on on the back wheel to open out the gear ratios a bit, could be worth asking about when you replace it next.

Something to consider,thanks.

I also want to change sprocket to 16/17-45 but need to know how many links are needed in the chain.
Tested the speed a few days ago but driving against the wind it did not get over 200 km, that is standard without fairing and sitting upright, (shifting down had no result at all)
stock=type525; 15x48, 118 links. (manual says; RK525 SMOZ7Y 118 links) 15x48=118 15x45=<118 16x48=>118 16x45=118? 17x45=118? I think the 118 link chain will do for all experiments:?:
i run a 16 tooth on the front, fixes the speedo error, drops the rpm 500 revs at the true speed, makes it a much nicer bike to ride at speed and around town, no chain changes made.

@650: going to a 16/17-45 will only result going even slower then you where already able to. 200 on a naked 650 (the Bandit has 78hp vs de 85 for our 650f) is pretty fast enough I would say.

I'm running a 16T front sprocket, and I like it. The slots at the rear axle are big enough to ajust the chain.
Currently I'm driving a Yamaha Fazer, because my bike is getting a technical overhaul for the winter including valve ajustment and synchronising the inlet...
Yamaha Fazer @ 90km/hour it's almost doing a stunning 5000rpm ! in 6th gear.
So the Suzuki 650 engines are runnung on a lower rpm (almost 500rpm less)

so is the collective wisdom to go 16 on the front, rather than drop a tooth on the back? Isn't it cheaper to replace the back sproket? What is the stock back sprocket, anyway?

Its also a matter of wear and tear. The smaller front sprocket wears out faster then the rear. Replacing the front for a bigger one will reduce the wear slightly.

Gotcha. Makes sense, thanks.
