I've been shifting more or less by the speeds suggested/recommended in the manual.....I've read the damn thing a few times but never put two and two together with the shift light.....
Does it make that much of a difference? Should I have the light turned on?

I just wanna chirp in here and tell you all what a revelation this gear indicator is! My previous bike obviously did not have one and many time I would be trying to shift one more when I'm already in 6th or getting confused and wondering in what gear I am in.
Now it's such a breeze. Just glance down and you can clearly see in what gear you are in. I tried imagining riding a bike without it and I cannot!
After my break in period I disabled the shift light. It's irritating cruising at 160km/h and having the light on all the time.
At first I thought the gear indicator was a silly little extra that I would never use, but I'm sold. It's a great feature. I test drove a V-Strom and a Versys and never knew where I was in the gearbox. The 'F' has made me lazy that way, but it's just one more feature that makes this bike better than so many of the others out there.
Overall, this is a ridiculous bike for the money. My mechanic just put new tires on it and took it for a rip, and he told me that it's one of the smoothest bikes he's ever been on.

Many years ago when bikes had wire wheels and rear drum and a front disk that never stopped you in the rain, chrome mudguards point ignition, kickstart and a 4into3 exhaust system, and the two stroke haze when going flat out I have to say i do miss my 1978 GT380 triple. Anyway this and others in the suzuki range in the 70s had the gear indicator as standard and had a habit of indicating more gears that was actually in the box happy days.

two thumbs up for the gear indicator ... like most, I thought it was another gimmicky item at first, but I find myself looking at it more and more to the point where I missed it when I installed the TRE ... oh well, back to counting gears
