I am going to run an experiment by putting a large powerful magnet at the bottom of the fairing in front of headers. The plan is to have it change a traffic light for me since traffic lights dont want to change for motorcycles. The magnet I ordered and am going to try is a 4"x1"x1/2"
thick Neodymium magnet. I will post the result once I get the magnet on May 5, 2009.

Why not try an old speaker magnet off a car speaker?

they make "green light triggers" just for motorcycles
but a DIY is just as good, and from the dimensions you posted it sounds about the same size

I got a similar magnet, though I've somehow misplaced it.

Let me know how you secured it, I never did find a good safe way to keep it on the bottom of the fairing.

I haven't found the need for one yet on this bike. It always seems to trigger the lights for me. My other bike was another story but so far so good with the F.

I have heard that putting your side stand down helps (puts some metal closer to the trigger) but I have never tried it myself.

Update:

I cant say that the magnet is really doing anything to tell you the truth. I've had it on there a while now. My opinion now is....
Dont waste your money like I did, it was just an experiment anyway.
Too bad I didnt see some great magical thing happen though.

GSX650F , what an awesome bike!

Believe it or not the elected officials here have actually created a law about traffic lights. Here in the state of SC if you are held more than 2 minutes by a traffic light and on a motorcycle you can LEGALLY run the light as long as the traffic is clear.

No kidding they really changed the law......can you belive it....

Same here in NC, if the light doesn't change within 2 min., then it's legal to proceed.

Same in MN, though the light has to stay red for an "unreasonable time", no defined limit.

Here, if you routinely have a problem with a light trigger on a motorcycle, you can call your local highway maintenance/traffic signal office and they will adjust the sensitivity of the signal. In all likelihood, this signal is not functionally properly.
