The first "must" should be MSF rider training. The bike in stock form is much better than most riders. Track training will improve riding skills, especially for those who think they already know how to ride.
For long rides, a cramp buster works well and is cheap. If money is plentiful, a Throttlemeister is very good.
I would worry more about improving your rider skills than trying to improve the bike.

A quick "cut & past" from my post in the "free mirror mod" thread.
One comment about some of the modifications I have read about on this site. 1st, I do believe in making the bike yours - I have added rim tape and a tank protector. The mirror change was more done out of safety than vanity (but I do like the way it looks). Beyond that, sure, I would love to get rid of that rocket launcher of a muffler and know that going to AVS levers would really look and work great. But adding about 15% to the price of the bike just doesn't seem necessary until after the original stuff wears out. I guess what I am saying is that we bought this bike because we believed that it would serve us well right out of the crate. Why try to turn it into something that it isn't? Upgraded pipe, brakes & steering sure helps. But if you are going to do all that, why not just buy a GSXR600 and loose a few hundred pounds (or kilos if you prefer) and get a bike that was designed carve the canyons and burn up the straights? Enjoy your ride but all the modifications in the world won't make this bike into a GP racer. Take the money you were going to spend on the performance parts and buy good riding gear. Wearing protective clothing is why I can still ride (part of the being on my 3rd bike in 5 months story).
OK, I'm done now! Thanks again for letting me be part of your community. Ride safe.

Thanks for all the replies.
Again, I am not trying to get a GSX650F and turn it into a racer.
I am just being realistic.
It is known that manufacturers save $$$$ on low-priced bikes by installing cheaper suspensions, for one example. (My old Concours is example of that)
But I don't see a lot of 650F people who said that they redid their suspension.
Not a lot of mods needed on 650F so it seems solid out of the crate.
