Just wondering some methods people use to downshift to a stop. Lets say that your in 4th gear... Do you disengage the clutch and downshift all the way to first gear or Do you disengage the clutch, downshift and engage the cluth for each gear down to 1st.

Kinda depends how soon I need to stop. Lots of times, I will brake a bit, then shift down a gear, brake a little (in order to flash the rear brake light). Shift down two gears, brake a bit, shift down to first, brake a bit. I want the brake light to light up, to catch the attention of any vehicle behind me that I am slowing down, that I am stopping.

Brake, down two, brake, down one into first gear. But I don't always ride in an even gear. On the street, I am usually in 3rd gear, sometimes in 2nd gear. At 45, I would probably be in 4th gear. So, from 4th gear, for me it would be brake, down two, brake, almost completely stopped, back brake, then into first gear simultaneously when stopping. Ready to go.

When you shift down two gears... Do you disengage and then engage the clutch for each gear or do you just disengage the clutch and down 2 gears.

Thx for the response

lots of times when it is an anticipated stop (stop sign/light), i will down shift without using the clutch and engine break along with using the breaks. If it is a quick stop i will engage the clutch down shifting all the way to first (or second) while breaking

I am in the habit of always matching gear to bike speed when braking. If I need to accelerate for any reason I know I will be in the right gear to speed off if necessary.

What Olequa said.

No, I pull in clutch, two clicks down, release clutch. I often get the RPMs up high enough to shift up 2 gears the same way also.

Thx to Olequa, Jerry, oxbow, and Ysteve1 for all the tips. I tried what Olequa said on yesterday and it worked like a charm.

THX again for all the advice and comments. 8)

Depending upon the situation, I generally down shift through all gears, tap the brake level to signal I'm slowing down to others behind and rarely actually use the brake to slow until a complete stop is required. In other words I engine brake a lot.

How I do it:

Pull the clutch in, blip the throttle and down shift, then release clutch. I do this with every gear while busy stopping. I've read numerous articles that you should actually engage every gear when down shifting.

Better on the engine as well as the gearbox. Not sure though, as I am no mechanical fundie. :)
