Good Day, Gidday or G'day knolltop314.

Dont know for sure mate, but probably because Australians are known as Aussies. The "s" is pronounced as "zed" then the word becomes Ozzies.

But then again we probably couldnt be bothered spelling out the whole name of Australia and it became Oz.

Some of us don't have brains, some lack a heart and few could use some courage.
So were off to see the Wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.

The term is just slang. Our original true blue accents pronounce the 'Aus' part and it sounds like Oz. (oz-tralia)
The word 'Aussie' is pronounced like it sould be spelt 'ozzie' - and sometimes both are used.
