I couldn't find anything in the threads regarding this, so I'm here to ask:

Has anyone had their rims powder-coated?

I'm looking at getting mine done, but don't know much about it. And I did find a site where a guy stated that after he had the rims coated, severe cracks developed in the wheels.

Any help/guidance here would be appreciated.

Yes, I have.
You can see the result here.

As for the durability I don't know for shure yet, but my friend (who works with powder coating) said that it shouldn't be a problem. It's very strong. The problem can be if you get a stone ore something hitting the wheel. That might chip of a piece of paint. Anyway, I believe that you'll nedd a bigger stone and a harder blow to damage powder coated wheels than wet painted ones.

The dilemma of the decision. Powder coat or Paint?

I had mine painted and was advised against powder coating. After 33,000ks mine still looked like like new. It cost me $400.

That bike is way too clean. Hell, there isn't even any grime on the rear shock! How the heck do you ride 33,000 kilometers and keep the bike so clean? What's your secret?

Those wheels do look sharp and yes, that bike is far too clean :)

Over here in Canada, there tends to be a lot of gravel, etc. especially during the spring before the roads are cleaned. I'm thinking that painted rims would take a beating. Or is the manufacturer simply using cheap paint on the wheels? Not sure, but powder coating is tough stuff, and my mechanic told me could do both wheels for $400 (same cost as your paint).

It is a dilemma.

Snikkeren, your powder coating looks good. I think I might go that route.

Hahaha. Too clean. You guys crack me up.

Those images were taken at aprox 8,000k so true to the fact that it was early in its life.
Here's a pic at......

and here's what it went though with the rims still looking shiny and new. Happened at about 12,000k's........this is the result of a lowside in the mountains, after being hit by a car 4 days prior!!!

Don't know what else I can say other than, with painted rims they were easy to keep clean and looked as good the day I sold it as to the day I had them done.
I don't have any 'last' pics of the bike but if it's any indication I payed $10k new and got $7k trade-in with over 30,000ks as it was 'all' in good condition.
The place I bought it, had it repaired and traded in on my Hayabusa is the same place and new every detail about the bike.
The rims did have the odd divet from stones but no paint chips, peel, fade, marks or scratches.

Which somewhat proves that the factory paint is of poor quality.

Got my wheels powder coated (sparkle silver). They match the silver cowling perfectly. And does it ever clean up the look.

Will try and get a picture up.
