So, earlier, I'm watching superbikes on the speed channel... and in a show about Oakland CA, they do a segment about a bike makeover called "Rat My Ride". Anyone see it? The bike they made over wasn't related to ours, but the graphic looked awfully familiar...

(The "F" on the fairing was more visible on the screen than came out in my cap shot of it)

In the UK ratting a bike means spraying it matt black (and I mean as it stands, engine, seat, clocks, everything) and taking off anything that makes the bike look good. It's a sort of anti-bike-consumerism. Look at this Goldwing!

Look at this one, holy crap!!!

Holy crap. I have never heard of this. And yet...it is somehow appealing.

Apparently in Oakland the term "Rat" is equivalent to "fighter bike" or as black and as mean as you can custom it. Seems the custom sport scene is huge there and it's not for the timid. Not having seen it first hand, I can only go from what I have seen on TV.

And oh by the way if anyone else gets the speed channel, I highly recommend the superbikes show to you. It's Jason Britton's stunt and custom and hyper sport bike showcase. I've got it on perpetual TiVo. :)

Also, Arenalife holy cats those bikes are indeed Mad Max-ish. And I think they would get HUGE respect in Oakland from what I gather.

I think "true" rat bikes cannot be "made", they must become such because of years of hard riding. They are usually old, cheap bikes that are kept going but the owners don't care about the looks so they eventually end up rattle can painted, often (matt) black because it's easy and cheap to refinish if need be.
