Well, I actually have a lot of criteria for next bike:
Uses regular gas.
Can do maintenance myself.
Economical (rules out Harleys and BMW) with good benefit/cost ratio. $7000 tops. This is a 2-wheeled toy after all. I am not buying it as a "look at me" device.
Chain drive, this eliminates one or two energy-wasting 90 degree gear sets. Yeah my Concours was nice with its shaft drive, but it was a heavy pig.
Good riding position- this eliminates the GSX family with "lay down" seating and clip-on handlebars bars.
Decent looks- this eliminates the Versys for example. Should look like a motorcycle, not a Tinker toy. Also Suzuki blue and white scheme is cool.
I wanted a 2-cylinder but a 4 would be better for touring.
Good gas mileage.
Now, if you have to take the bike to a dealer to do a valve adjust, there is pretty much a wasted day. PLUS the $200 or $300 or $400 you donate. I just can't justify regular maintenance costing hundreds of dollars. I always do my own maintenance for all of my vehicles.
Removing camshafts to adjust valves represents a STUPID design and the aggravation of it would make me wish I'd chosen a different bike.
My Concours was bad enough, just getting the valve cover out of the way. At least I could adjust the valves myself though.
Thanks for your input.
