Can anyone help me with this?

Do the keys have to be programmed when swapping the ECU from restricted to unrestricted? The law here allows the machine to be put back on full power two years after taking the test and if the rider is over 21. The machine was bought with two modules that seem to be 'plug-and-play' and the one that was in the bike was the restrictor.

Did as dhula suggested and works just fine.
Throughout the time the restrictor was on the bike the engine speed was unpredictable. The engine stuttered and sometimes would suddenly 'race' from very slow speeds, scaring the crap out of me. I know it wasn't just me letting go of the clutch. Removal of the restrictor has made the engine much smoother and far more controllable .
Just thought I'd let you know

It's good to know that derestricting it made it more controllable.

I wonder if I could convince "plod" that derestricting my LAMS bike (before I was allowed) was all in the name of safety.

Perhaps not!!!! :(

Forget it Oldbloke ...its been talked about alot here ,search GSX650FU might bring up some all posts for you.

Long story short for us in OZ ,with the LAMS bike ....it cost a small fortune to buy one...insurance will be void..and you will be lucky to get it threw rego with out selling your first born.

Sleddog is correct Oldbloke. Hard as you try you, you won't beat an organisation set up as a 24/7 predatory industry. Was out again today, and wasn't imagining it, the bike is much smoother [and therefore safer] without the restrictor. It's the way it was designed of course. Maybe there was method in the madness beforehand, 'cos clutch control became a religion while the bike was in its jittery state :roll:

Sorry, guys -- I'm sitting in Texas, trying to follow this conversation, and am hopelessly lost.

Are you saying that in Scotland (and maybe Australia?) they sell a version of the GSX650F that is somehow de-rated to a lower power? And this is some sort of a "beginning rider" setting that can be reversed (with the installation of a computer module) when you "graduate" to a full motorcycle license?

Yeap ..thats right ,they only changed the ECU on the learner model can only to up to 7000rpm and it won't make any more power ...and here in OZ ,you can't legaly change it for the normal 650F ,by changing the ECU .
You must sell your bike and buy the normal 650F ,if you like the bike but want more power when your get you full licence....its a joke . :roll:

We here in America don't have restricted bikes. A 16 year old can go out and buy a Busa if they want and ride it if the have passed a MSF course...Not exactly the best idea..

In Australia you need a permit signed in triplicate (and pay the administration fee) before you are allowed to fart. It wasn't always this way. You know, we are actually prohibited by law from changing the washers in our house taps, you are meant to get a licensed plumber to do it. Pathetic.
<takes deep breath>
...but getting back to bikes, I think the Australian system is a good idea, seeing as there are lives at stake. I just wish they had the same system for cars, seeing as a car is far more dangerous. Bloody Commodore's with P-plates are gonna kill me one day.
