I took the screen off to get it tinted ...the place I went to couldn't do it ,but anyways ...here is a how to.
The owners book tells you want to do ,but if your unsure use this as a "guide" , it's not off a manual.

If some one knows a better way speak up ..or this is the way I did it.
It's not hard ,but abit confusing and a worry with out a manual or never doing some thing like this before on a bike and we have alot of new riders etc .. .

First get a piece of paper and draw a picture of the bikes and place screws in the picture ,not all screws are the same size ..I should of been a artist ! .
I pulled a few extra things off to clean the bike ,so don't look at my drawing and how many screws.
Image

Take these 2 screws out to remove the gauges housing....speedo etc.
Image

Now this is the hard part . :?
The gauges is held in by the 2 screws you removed and a plastic pin that is on the back of the gauges housing.
{if your not sure what I mean remove the side panel you remove to check the water level ,it's the same sort of pin and hole.}

Lift the bottom of the gauge housing A LITTLE and try to wiggle it out A LITTLE till you can get your fingers on each side of the gauge housing and pull it straight out towards you...I found it easier to sit on the bike ..you pull straight then.
Image

And the pin in the back .
Image

Remember don't pull hard ,it will come just do it slow, it's still wired up .

Image
^^^^ Push down the clip ,it's the flat piece in the middle of the plug ,you can just see a small circle on it ...see your owners book for another picture.
Image
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Remove the 2 screws at the front of the screen.
Remove the plastic fairing cover that the guages sits in {the one with the warning stickers on it ,the ones you probably scraped off.}
Image

And now the screen.
Remove the 2 screws that the screen is held on by under the fairing.
Then pull it up and out on ONE SIDE.
Image

Alot of these screws have rubber gromits and metal clips that the screw ,screws into ,that can come off and so be careful not to lose them.
To put it back together just to it in reverse ,and check the wire cable for the plug is not in the way and push the guage housing back in. 8)

It's not hard to do and ,easy once you have done it but take your time .
You can use this "GUIDE" to change the head light.
Replace screen.
Paint it.
Get it tinted.
Remove RAM air duct covers ,so you can paint your air duct mesh.
Remove RAM air duct covers ,to fit driving lights under the mesh.

Please NOTE .do this at your own risk.

Once again, another helpful how-to. Thanks Sleddog. I have been considering getting the screen tinted.

This forum gets better every day.

Thanks Sleddog, you went to a lot of trouble to put out this information. Wish I had it before I changed my screen. I'm not very familiar with these type of mechanics and I more or less followed the same lines. The thing that really baffelled me was the rubber gromet mountings, if I may call them that. It took me a while before I could puzzel out how the things worked. The rubber gromet has this little brass nut embedded into it and when you turm in the srew, it compacts the rubber sleeve and expands it to wedge and secure in the hole. Wow it took me by surprise I never seen one of those before. Once I worked that out all went well and I had no spare parts left over. Thanks again, great forum.

Hi Bryan ,yeah never seen one of them before ,sort puzzled me to ,but since I look heaps of pictures I figures out where they went etc.
I'm just playing with this bike pulling things off slowly and putting it back together ,I want to use this bike to learn about things.
I'll never touch motors and any thing like that ,but I'll give a few things a go.

FWIW I managed to change my screen by only taking the instrument panel off.
I recall that's what the instructions for the MRA Vario Touring screen said to do.
The two screws are hard to reach but it is doable.
Sleddog's method might be easier, hard to estimate without trying both ways.

I did this earlier today, good tips. The MRA instructions were some of the worst I have ever seen, they pretty much said...

"1 Unscrew necessary screws
2 Remove and replace windscreen"

Absolute fantastic instructions! Just put on my Vario MRA touring screen. Be careful not to drop those bloody rubber grommets in the fairing or engine compartment. Took me a half hour to find one I dropped, found it on a small ledge laughing its head off! Also, when I plugged the instrument cluster back in the only thing I had to do was reset the clock, everything else seemed okay. Being only 5'1" I will have to play with the vario settings to find the best wind protection.

Damn, you need to have the hands of a child to get into the front of this bike. The stupid rubber grommets on the bottom two mounts kept moving when I went to seat my new screen.

Good write up, now I need to get over my apprehension of taking parts off my bike.

After fiddling for 30 minutes with just the instrument cluster out, I took the extra 5 minutes to remove the other panel and its 8-10 screws. Just couldn't get a good grip on the expanding rubber grommets up inside. Once I did that the removal went well. Put on a MRA touring screen in smoke. Not sure that it really helps with pushing the air higher, we'll see after a while. Thanks Sleddog for the write up because as mentioned the MRA directions were terrible with unusable pictures. Only thing I'm not sure of is where whether the wiring harness for the instrument cluster went in front of or behind the metal bracket that the cluster plugs into. Seems to fit either way. Should have taken a picture when I first pulled it off, as I usually do when working on something new.

Do the rubber grommets have to be removed to take off the windshield? If not, do they have a tendancy to fall out when removing the windshield?

Thanks.

Yes, they have to be removed as they pass through the holes in the screen to secure it.
