Two of my friends wanted to go to Sturgis. I had never been there before, so I decided to join them
From Denver to Sturgis is about 400 miles. We left on Saturday and got back on Tuesday, putting a total of 1,300 miles on the odometer.
The 650F did great! I have owned the bike for 1.5 years now, and I am very happy with it. It's a great all-round bike for little money. It's sporty enough for me, yet long distances are no problem either. My bike is mostly stock. The mods so far are a Leovince SBK exhaust, center stand, RAM Mount GPS-holder, Digital Voltmeter and a Saddleman TS3200 tail bag. The seat was okay. I was not in any pain, but at the end of each day I could understand why people are getting a better aftermarket seat. I just don't like to do that because my feet may no longer touch the ground (I'm only 5'8" and 140 lbs) The other thing that would be nice is a throttle lock, just to relax the right hand/arm every now and then.
My friends were riding a HD Road King and a Honda VTX800.
It was cool to see the crowd in Sturgis (there are enough pictures already on the Internet, so just google on it ). A ridiculous amount of motorcycles, 99% HD's. Very, very few sportbikes, but I had no problems with it. The die-hard Harley guys will ignore you, but no hostility.
Apart from Sturgis, we also visited Badlands National Park and Mt. Rushmore. The Black Hills are awesome. We did get rained on a couple of times, but we had proper rain gear. Luckily we did not get hit by hail.
Attached are some pics. Apparently you can only attach 3 pictures, so I will have to do multiple posts

You took a sport bike to Sturgis and live to tell the tail...your more hard core then the doctors and lawyers..OPPS .I mean ,Hog riders. Its on my Bucket list to go to sturgis and buffalo chip Thanks for to report and pics .
Also if you get a sheep skin pad for you arse on long rides ,it helps ALOT and cheap cheap . But the best comfort for long rides on a motorcycle is a Air hawk seat...{google it} and you can keep it for any bike you change to or upgrade , saves buying a $400 aftermarket seat for every bike you buy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G_yZLgF76c

Sportbike at Sturgis! What courage!

Great pics, looks like a whole pile of fun! I'm jealous again - we don't have anything quite like Sturgis, or Burning Man over here...
Which I don't get! Australia seems like the ideal place for these kinds of festivals. What gives? I always found Australians to be much more sociable than Americans.

I think I have seen about 20 sportbikes in and around Sturgis, compared to 100,000 Harleys I also believe I was the only guy in town with a helmet and without any tattoos
Again, it's no big deal. There were plenty of 1 percenters in town and even they didn't seem to care. It was fun to see the scene at least once, and the trips we made in the area were awesome.
I must say though that the most beautiful girls were on those sportbikes, either as a passenger or a rider.
The zuki was a pleasure to ride every day. The fairing is doing a great job keeping you out of the wind, and rain! Even with the stock windshield. I was getting about 57 mpg on the long highway rides.
@Sleddog: thanks for the tip on the Air Hawk seats. I may give that a try!

They pulled me up down there last year for a rego check and to write down my licence details (they were doing it to everyone they could on the way onto the island). I had no P plate on, had my yoshi blaring away and a big fresh burnout line down my back wheel... Didnt seem to bother them. I think at events like that, they sort of have to realise that it is a motorcycle orientated event, and they excersize a bit of tollerence and let alot of things slide... Not to mention, some of the machines that were pumping away down there, my little 650 was the least of their worries... I remember that as they were recording mine and my mates rego details and licence number etc, a big group of harley riders were riding past, and the head copper at the front just yells "fuck me! I dont wanna pull all of them up! Let them pass!", which gave me the idea that they're just down there to keep the peace and show that they were going to be present. Not to harass every bloke who tears past on an unbaffled KTM RC8R... The copper who did me was nice as pie and just said "just keep an eye on the speed this weekend Valentino, the highway patrol are everywhere"... And he was right, because fuck me, there were some highway patrol cars and speed camera's down there!!!

Speculating, I reckon your NSW plate did you a favour there - they weren't gonna waste their time defecting you, because you'd just ride back over the border and forget about it... But I've heard WAY too many stories from Victorian riders about harrassment at PI to the point where they're staying away.

Lol. Police are a pretty harsh bunch down south of the border... Down there, the speed gun shoots to kill 0_o We have a rule, once you're in Victoria, back the fuck off and just do the right thing. Makes for very boring riding alot of the time I've passed police along the snowy's here in NSW doing 100 in the 80 zones up high, and they leave you alone, but from what I understand, the Victorian ones will get you for 5 k's over? Which is an absolute joke. I know for a fact (my mates a civil engineer and has had many rants over this topic) that the Hume Highway is designed to be travelled along comfortably at 130km/h. Wide roads, double lanes, big barriers seperating the 2 directions of traffic etc. But the "NSW and VIC Hold your hand we'll keep you safe little boys and girls" state governments can't allow that... If you can't handle the speeds, back off. Slow down. Start letting people take responsibility for their own actions for once...
And now I'm fired up. lucky i rode into work this morning
Btw, who DOESEN'T like hearing an unbaffled exhaust, or seeing a good looking bike without that redanculous looking mud flap out the back? Sif making your bike look and sound awesome should be against the law...
