After doing some research on the K&N filter debate i decided to put my stock oem filter back in. When i pulled the lid for the cover i discovered the oil from the filter was pulled into the air box. Not alot mind you but enough to make me think that it probably wasn't the best thing for my bike. Not trying to alarm anyone but it is something you may want to check on once in a while. BTW it was like that from the factory , i didn't add any oil to it at all.

In all honesty, I'd be just as concerned about the qaulity of the fuel you use every time you fill up. Fuel contains dirt and crap too which is going into your engine!!!! Do you re-filter the fuel as you fill up at the bowser to make sure no more micro particles are entering your tank?. How did you run the engine in?. That has a big impact on it's overall life. What engine oil do you use? etc, etc, etc......
I too have had a look at the available info, independant tests etc.. on the K&N filters. One fact stood out to me more than any other.
There are no real world, realistic or credible tests to determine just how much an engines life is reduced or affected by the result of particles entering through the air filter. Obviously wear is going to occur over time, but just how much? and is it really worth giving a crap about. A K&N filter may let more particles though against the OEM Filter but does it honestly make any significant impact to the engines life?. For all we know the filtration level of the filter is 20% more than acceptable for the level of particles entering the engine.
Engines need to breathe, and the better they breathe the better they run. Is it possible that an engine's life is actually increased by using a K&N because it had a better rate of air intake over so many years?.
There are too many things that will cause wear and reduce the life of your engine. So why do you all give so much concern to just the K&N air filter?
Very Good point i also have concerns about NOOO OIL Cooler yes out here in the delta Antioch CA
it is HOT and WOW the Clutch COVER is HOT so yes i also worry about the oil and other things .
The Engine i think can take a lot of abuse.
Still i have done High Vacuum coating process for fiber optic demux filters and the coating ARE Micro thin. So yes i do think Air is the one item that can cause damage.
Yes You are very correct about Fuel. I use Chevron. It is recommended by Oakland Mer Benz dealer My Girlfriend and ice dance parter tell me that the service department tell her to use ONLY Chevron in her E 320.
I try to keep tank topped off. And i keeep fuel filler area clean. And i do regualar oil changes.

Well let me put it this way. I put 2,000 miles on the K&N and it didn't even look used when i pulled it yesterday. When i looked at my oem filter before i put it back in ( it had maybe 750 miles on it ) it had definitely been doing it's job because you could definitely see the dirt it was filtering. I'm not bashing the K&N i have used them for years but i have read enough info. lately that made me second guess their claims. I could care less about 1or 2 extra horsepower. I'm more concerned about getting the best filtering i can.
