I just thought it would have better Typical Technical Properties after all of the performance claims they make. I'm not saying good things don't happen between the two extremes, but the numbers do give you a good idea of the quality of the Synthetic Base Oil and/or Additives used. Personally if I was looking for a new oil to use regardless of price, Royal Purple would not even be a consideration for me based on the numbers I look at. And on that note there is no doubt in my mind I could take Pennzoil 30W dyno juice and use a 2000 mile drain interval and get as much life out of an engine as anybody out there. After all this is an oil thread and you just read my opinion, and when you step back and look at the big picture...in the end I'm just a guy with an opinion. I just had to yank yer chain because you used the best word

(as far as oil threads go, this one has been pretty sedate?)

I use the Mobil synthetic as well. For a little over $9 (US) a quart at Auto Zone, you can't beat it. $15 for some of these other fancy oils gets to be expensive real quick. We're not talking about trying to get 300,000 miles out of an auto engine here so at some point your just throwing money away. How many miles can one expect to get out of this engine anyhow?

Alot! IF you take care of it. So proper maintenance and dont trash the engine while its cold. In Holland a big bike magazine takes a bike every year through a 50k km endurance test. Last one I read (cant remember what year) was a R1. After the 50k there was minor wear on the big end bearings and the clutch forks showed signs of wear. I´m gentle on the engine while its cold. I fitted a Oil Temp Meter so I know exactly how warm the oil is and to what level I can rev.

So if you take care of the bike, the bike will take care of you. I believe 100k miles is surely possible without a total revision. But still there are many factors to deal with. Is the bike stored in a garage or 24/7 outside, do you drive year round, do you drive mostly on highway or is it more traffic light to traffic light (more wear on the transmission parts)

For instance, my brother has a Mitsubushi Carisma 1.6 with 220k miles. No oil consumption and still has the first clutch. Thats mainly due to the fact that he drives 100 miles on the highway every day and never in the city.

Kadett, you've made my point for me. Motor oil aside, if one does as you have described, the motor should last as long as it possibly can. What type of synthetic one chooses to use probably doesn't make one bit of difference with regards to longevity of the motor.

The only 2 reasons why I would switch to synthetic are:
* I drive alot of miles/km a year so the service interval can be moved up to 10.000km (6000 miles) instead of the perscribed 6000km oil change. Thus the extra cost of Full Synth vs Semi is earning itself back through 60% less service maintenance, but most people doing this are already doing there own maintenance.
* I live in a very hot country, dont have a water-oil cooler (from the Bandit 1250) fitted so my Oil temps would rise up to 120+degrees C (248+F) degrading the semi oil and thus reducing its operation time/length. This will not happen with Full Synth.

Since I dont drive alot of miles/km (about 5-6000km) I change the oil every 6k km as perscribed. Oil filter should be done at 18k km but I'm gonna do it at 12k.
I'm using Castrol RS Power 10W40 Semi, never had any problems with Castrol oil in my '94 Celica Turbo and its averaged priced (45,- per 4liter)
