So I guess since removal or such is right out, looks like the best I'll be able to do for now is wrangle up some black adhesive tank pads and get creative. Anyone have a favorite site to shop for that kind of thing at?

Lol. Who'd have thought.
I'll ask differently. Anyone have a fave brand or seller of such items? Or know of one with lots of tank coverage? Or one suitable for cutting up and customizing what it covers?

td, did you see the tank cover that I listed above in a link?
I sure did and thanks for pointing it out. Looking at it though, it looks more like a bra than the thinner adhesive types I'd prefer. Did I look at it wrong?

Indeed! Some googling is helping me a bit... I found a DIY adhesive protector at luckybike.com that is a simple sheet that can be cut to your own shapes, but the only color I saw was simulated carbon fiber look and not black (by the way, I don't "get it" about that fake carbon fiber look so many products come in... I think it looks weird, but that's just me I guess). The search continues!

Real CF is one of the toughest things to flex/bend/mold... a guy at my bike shop said he had a real CF rear tire hugger custom built for his CBR from Australia, cost him about $800
