I have decided to go all-black and all decal-free. However, the tank decals apparently are underneath the clear coat and, to my skills at least, unremovable. The fairing decals came off in a surprisingly straightforward manner.

So my question to you good people is: Can the fuel tank decals to your knowledge be removed from the tank despite the clear coat -- or in the absence of that, is there a tank pad that will cover them in a classy and cool looking and all-black manner? On my bike at least, all color is to be banned, not even a speck. So any tank pad that adheres and covers must be unobtrusive and all black and achieve full coverage.

Any ideas? Please, if you suggest a product, do include a specific link!

If in full coverage you mean the covering of the decals, I don't know if you've gone through ebay but I discovered this one last night. I don't know about removing the stickers or anything, just in case you missed this, her 'tis.

In general I hate ebay. Rather deal with merchandisers that go to the (minimal) trouble of setting up their own site. But thanks for the thought!

Also, I don't really want a bra. I want a permanent veneer of some sort, if I cannot remove the decal itself.

Thats unusual TD. All my decals including the ones on the tank came straight off.

Really! How did you do it? I haven't even attempted the tank decals yet because it's obviously apparent that the clear coat paint is covering them. The fairing decals were readily peelable. Was your tank festooned with decals differently than me, or am I just being too cautious?

The black bike is so fast, the clear coating completely dissolves in no time, due to massive air friction.

That would explain why I am unable to even touch the surface! It moves away too fast forward!

Kidding aside... I can clearly see the clear coat over the tank decals whereas the fairing decals were just out there ready to be peeled. I don't think I'm going to get away with peeling them without repainting and coating the entire tank. So I wonder... am I wrong? Has anyone seen what I see and overcome it? Can it be covered? Am I missing an idea someone else has had?

Perhaps you need to buy a spare tank for a K9 model: I think they have no decals on them?

LOL. If the K9 model has no decals on the tank stock, then that might work. At ridiculous cost I'm sure! Thing is, I recently replaced my right fairing (undercowl) and I asked for one with no decal and they said "sorry bub". So I had to peel and use "goo gone". Which is okay, it came out awesome. But the tank is another matter because of the clear coat. And I don't think I should have to cover the entire cost of a new tank just to clean up after their nonsense!! LMAO

I'm sure a few people on here have these and I've not heard any complaints.

The '09's tank decals are not covered by the clear coat, maybe that's what DAROOKIE has. Mine are definately under the clear coating.

I have a 08. Tank decals are not under the clear coat.
They will come off without issue, as long as you exercise care.
I have owned a lot of motorcycles and have never found the "safety" decals to be under the clear coat. The manufacturer affixes the decals for liability reasons, but realizes, one of the first things the average owner will do is remove them.
I would be pissed if I could not remove them, or risked damage to the tank finish, in doing so.

he is referring to the stripes on the tank, not the warning stickers.

Right, thanks for clarifying for me. It's the colored "swish" decals that I want to remove or cover up (and if covered, with something close to paper thin, not a bra or bag).

It does appear the warning stickers might come off without too much trouble with a little care and Goo Gone. Haven't tried yet.
