I got the wave last week from a guy in a Jeep with the tops off. I felt guilty 'cause I had no idea they were part of the club ;) and didn't react fast enough to return the wave. WHO KNEW!

he probably rides too but forgot he was in his Jeep that day. I have done the same thing in my truck when another rider goes by

I wave at people on their bikes as they go by then remember I'm driving at the moment. Maybe that's why I get the strange looks

??? What's to be embarassed about? Is it somehow not the cool thing to do? I don't get it.

If it ever was "cool", it ain't now.
And this seems to be proven by the thousands of "I waved/nodded/showed my penis to another rider and they didn't respond, boo-fukken-hoo" threads that exist on biking forums worldwide.
Before the internet you didn't crap on incessantly about nodding, you just did (or didn't). And if you got ignored, WHO FRIGGIN CARES??!!
No wonder newbies come off at alarming rates - apparently they're too busy scanning 360 degrees to ensure they've been validated by other riders to notice the car/truck/grass/oil/diesel/bump etc they're about to hit!

Ride your bike, don't wave at me you idiot.

That's why it's embarrassing...

Funny.
I've had bikes that caused so much pain on LONG rides that I couldn't stand to move my left arm to wave (pain in shoulder/back area). I've learned that you can almost just LOOK at a bike coming at you and tell if the guy is going to give a quick wave or not.

I was riding the F home from one town over and a guy on a newer BMW RT passed me on the hiway, slowed down and checked out the bike, and gave me a thumbs up as he moved on. I have found BMW riders around here ( and I am one) MORE likely to wave than most other brands.
