Ok...so i'm thinking about going back to the cruiser world and saying good-bye to my girl SUZI! I have an '09 Suzuki GsxF. 22,500 km. So i'm at a local dealership and i see a used bike there that i'm very interested in. An '05 Honda VTX 1300. 17,000 km. Selling for $5995. I'm not even close to selling my F yet, but i just wanted to see what these guys would give me on a trade. So i know i'm at a dealership and know that you get bottom line price for a bike...but i was FLOORED when he said $3800 for my bike WTF! And he's like "Well it's a Suzuki! they don't have good resale and not much demand". I traded a bike for the SUZI. In May of '09. I had an '99 Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe with 24,000 KM. I got $3000 plus taxes for the Honda. So i ask the guy at this dealership what HE would have givin me for the VLX and he ALSO said $3000!! And i'm like "Are you FUCKED !!...SO your only gonna offer me an extra $800 for an '09 motorcycle"!!!!
I can't believe it!! SO i guess if i had my time back i would not have purchased SUZI..i hope she doesn't read this... LOL As much as i have loved this bike, i'm not happy with the resale value. Needless to say. when i do decide to sell SUZI, it will be privately.

The 650F is mostly bought by commuters who usually by there bikes new/almost new with a few k miles/km on it. I got mine for €7200,- in August '08. With the rear end/mirror/tiny parts still scuffed because of my high sider I would be lucky to get €4000,- for it with 18k on the clock now.

Ya it can be depressing especially with bikes that remain in stock so long. I bought a new '07 GSX650F at a dealer for $4995 a month ago. The '05 might be a tad high IMO but I don't know your market.

Considering I just bought a brand new '09 for just over $5800, and considering that riding season is coming to an end fairly soon for many of us in the snow/ice belt so the bike will likely sit in inventory for several months if not longer, and considering the dealer will want to make at least some profit when it does sell, it doesn't seem like you got such a bad offer for your trade.

Any Japanese bike, low miles, showroom shape, then write off any and all mods regardless of price, trade it in on another bike in less than a year and be prepared to get half of your money back...if that. And if you get a good trade in that you are happy with...all they did was tack on the difference to your new bike. It hasn't changed in the 40 years I have been buying and selling 25+ bikes I have owned, sorry...nothing new at all.

You will get your best deal by selling it privately in the Spring.
If you had less than 10K on it, you might get $6,500 to $7,000 by selling it privately in the spring. With 22K on it, you will probably get $5,500 to $6,500 . In the U.S. , you would get much less.
At this time of year, VERY few bikes are selling (I have seen some reasonably priced GSX650F's in Kijiji for 4+ months).
Suzuki's are tougher to sell right now because of the problems the manufacturer are having (not importing any street models into the US for '10, late in releasing '11 model details). This makes potential buyers nervous.
Suzuki make some great bikes, but they are "buy and hold" bikes. The longer you keep them, the better.

When I trade in bikes in winter, the dealer will say that no one is riding because of the cold and wet, so they cant offer me a good price. When I trade bikes in summer, the dealer says the market is flooded because everyone is riding because of the nice weather, so they cant offer me a good price. There is always a reason why they can't offer you a good price. The only way to get sensible prices (buying or selling) is to go private, but that carry's its own risks. To maximise trade in values, I always try to trade in my bike when it still has plenty of rego left on it (6 mths ideally) and the tyres are good. If either of these are not the case the dealer will factor in the cost to him and subtract that from the trade in price. Dealers like to have at least several months where they are able to try to sell the bike without having to spend any money on it. Also, I have found that the amount that dealers are willing to offer can vary by up to $1000 so if you are looking at trading in on a brand new bike it pays to shop around (obviously). Of all the bikes I have traded in, at no time have the dealers asked to see a service history. Selling and buying privately, the service history becomes far more important. A while ago I became interested in the problem of bike depreciation, since the 650F is the first brand new bike I have ever bought and I was attempting to determine the "sweet spot" for trading it in. I studied the minimum and maximum trade in values for several Suzuki bikes that I am interested in (GSX 650F, GSX 1400, DL 650 VStrom and M50 Boulevard) and then plotted the average trade in value for each bike. I got the data from "Redbook", one of the official automotive industry researchers for Australia. I was expecting the first year to show a massive drop in price and then a curve until almost horizontal as the bike gets really old, but over the four year period I examined, this was not the case. In fact, the depreciation for every model of bike proved to be almost linear. The conclusion I reached was that there really was no sweet spot for trading in a bike in it's early years and that my trade in date should be determined by other factors. So basically, I will wait till the trade in value I am offered is equal to or less than the amount I owe on the bike.

What was the price for . Sales tax. The price for the yearly road tax you used. A new set of tyres. 1 year less warrenty.
I payed $10,000 and less these parts and taxs ,the bike is worth about $8000 ,even if it had ZERO kms on it.
Makes me laugh when I see adds for our bike with 12,000-30,000km ,and they think the bike is worth $8000. They forgot in the sales price was all these things they did used or taxs they had to pay .
If some idiot brought it ,it would cost them. $350 in sale tax... $600 in yearly road tax. $500 for new tyres.....thats $8000 +$1450=$9450.......you can get a new one for another $500
Any they wonder why its not selling

I just got a price on my 08, $4500 without even looking at it on a trade, this was in Delhi Ontario and was the max book value for that year, an 08, 12,000kms, in Brantford with givi/suzuki 3 pce luggage was selling for $6900 at a dealer a couple of weeks ago, I tend to buy non current models new ... cheaper to buy, but you loose on the year at resale, what you gain in one hand you loose from the other,so i look at it as a wash, i think your price offered was low, but, if you look kijji Canada there are a bunch around the 4500 to 5000 mark with much lower kms, its what ever the market wil bare rather than what brand / model you may have.New bike sales are down over 60% in Nth america in the pst 2 years and that reflects the new prices and on the resale market
Good luck on what ever you decide to do.

i think the LOW trade in with our 650 is
1. WEIGHT 2. Under 1000 cc 3. design and eng issues that i outlined in another post. 4. The market is flooded with used and a lot are 750 and above, so the Dealer gets the upper hand

The first problem, and the last problem; you went to the dealer. Wholesale for yours and retail for his. They are in business to make money so are you suprised. Having worked in a dealership for 12 years, they have a lot of overhead: floorplans, inventory they pay for, and help. They might sit on your bike for 6 months or more and they borrow the money to to that. dealers get a bad rap BUT if they don't make money, they close up, plain and simple. We need them and they need us. BTW, no I don't work at dealerships any more; not enough money!
