It's been a busy couple of weeks for me, with preparation for "Ride to the Sea", our annual Halloween party, and tomorrow's journey chewing up most of my time.
Tomorrow a lot of it pays off, as I'm off on my solo trip to Melbourne down the east coast It's only about 1300Km and I'm taking 2 days to do it, but I'm pretty excited about the whole deal - longest solo journey and the first on this bike, plus I'm meeting my brand new niece when I get there! I had my panniers and backpack packed on the weekend, and fitted the whole rig to the bike for a test run on Monday's commute - pretty happy with the setup I have to say! Hehe I was gonna post a pic but I've packed the camera before retrieving the images! For now, just imagine the Oxford soft bags chockers and fully expanded, with a backpack occy-strapped to the back seat and attached to the panniers. When it heats up tomorrow arvo I can also take my jacket off and strap it to the backpack... I have a Google map and internet access on my phone, but I really don't have a plan on where to stop or spend the first night - for me, this is the way to travel. I'll mostly just make it up as I go along depending on weather, fatigue, and just how badly I need a beer.
I'll be returning next Wednesday, but will be blasting up the Hume in a single day to save time - I've got shit to do before the Ride, and 4 days to do it... See yas next week!

Thanks gents. Woke at 4.30am this morning, already buzzing Just having coffee and running a pretty extensive pre-flight, and I'll be outta here before 7am. No sign of the forecast rain either, so we're off to a brilliant start.

Kreepster,
That's a long haul up the Hume (in a day), even with 110 zones; flat 'n' straight for the most part as well. In a car with some music and company's alright, but quite a long haul on a bike I would imagine. Though I guess you'll rip the wrist every now and again when the boredom sets in (every five minutes! ).
Why not leave half a day early, stay the night in Bairnsdale (Melbourne to Bairnsdale is pretty non-descript as well) and shoot home from there? Like you said in your opening comment...

...and south of Sydney/north of Bairnsdale is all good! North of Melbourne is pretty ho-hum.
Travel safe, have fun!
Cheers, Matt
[Edit, Oh, just realised you're off in about 7 minutes - guess my suggestion is mute ]

go hard NK! If there are any unused patches of tyre left on your bike upon your return (and believe me, i'll be looking!) i wont be happy! Have a good one though. If you're in the snowy's on the way back and need a place to stay whilst fooling around up there, there's a really comfy couch and a shit load of cold beer in my fridge here in wagga if its needed. Have fun

I'm back, and what a week!
Thursday was a cruisy run down to Pambula with plenty of stops to rest, eat and visit friends on the way. But at about 3.30pm I turned on to Mount Darragh Road and left civilisation (and reason) behind The speedo didn't go under 140Kmh much at all, and managed 225 a couple of times for reasonable periods too... Long sweepers and longer straights, with occasional gravel patching all through a corner to keep you awake! And once I passed the school bus it was all mine up to Bombala
Had an interesting night in Bombala as the Fourth Reich M/C rolled into town at the same time as me - they let me take some pics but I've promised not to share those ones under threat of hunting down and shanking All I can say is that they have an impressive road setup, complete with 2 support vehicles, a mobile kitchen, camping etc equipment for 50 and a trailer for the obligatory broken-down Harley...
Early Friday I crossed into Victoria on the Monaro highway, and slowed down a bit as I hear VicPol are absolute constables But not before suffering a bird strike to the helmet at about 130Kmh! Managed to turn my head a bit so he hit the left side of the visor - hurt my neck a little and I was picking feathers out of my vents at Cann River...
Saturday was a group ride with 84 other bikes, and raising $1700 for a young fella's Paralympic dream - chuffed... Had a large moment on the ride, involving a tank slapper and an overcooked corner - powered out of the slapper then juuust managed to pull it up for the corner, with the rear wheel skipping and wagging around madly.
Left Melbourne yesterday at 7.40am after only 4 hours sleep, and arrived at my garage door at precisely 6.30pm after a blistering run up the Hume. Changing into 6th at 120Kmh and then sitting it on about 8K RPM, we were cruising along between 140 and 150 depending on the terrain... Rain all the way from Gundagai to home didn't slow us down either - I was very impressed with her performance the whole trip.
Slept like a baby last night, and feel fine today - I could do it again tomorrow.

Fuel economy? You're kidding, right? Started with a full tank at Bentleigh, and put about $50 in it on the way - still had enough to blat around today before filling up...

Spot on Brother Voided - I was too busy enjoying the scenery and scaring shit out of the locals to care about mileage. And when you're hunched under the screen doing 225, wondering if that left-hander is gonna close up around the bend...
