I am approaching 200 miles on my machine (won't stop raining here in N.C., grrrr) and thought I might go ahead and do an oil change just to get any metal out that might be breaking down in the break in process. Good idea or waste of time in advance of the first 600 miles as per the manual? What brand of dino oil do folks out there like? I hear it's not a good idea to switch to synthetic for a couple of thousand miles. Cheers!

Everyone has their own opinion on the matter. I used Repsoil on the 600 mile change and at 2300 miles went to Mobil1 4T. I will stay with it from here on out.
That is what the dealership recommended.
Honestly, wait until the 600 until you change the oil. This is the most critical for the break in process.
I know you think it would be best for the bike but the factory oil is different than normal oil. It is made to help the bike break in correctly! wait until the 600 mile mark, the benifits will help your bike last for years!

Always AMSOIL 10w40. Bike runs great and shifts better with this oil. Full synthetic, and your motor and clutch will last the max.
A mechanic at my dealership came out as I was waiting to have my bike prepped and said that if I ever switched to synthetic, to go with Amsoil cause (he said) that it is the only oil to leave a sufficient coating on the pistons while the oil is in the sump i.e. when the bike is not running. I'm sure Amsoil is a top notch oil but I don't know that I believe it is any better than some of the others.
My dealership also carries Spectro and of course they claim to be the absolute best out there but that stuff is like $12.99 a quart.

I'm coming off of a Vstrom with about 10k miles under my belt. I used Shell Rotella-T 5w-40 synthetic. The oil is designed for high-sheer environments such as diesel trucks. It smoothed out the shifting on my Vstrom considerably and holds up well over time. Never had an issue. If you would like to see a more in-depth review on different oils, check this out: http://www.fireblades.org/forums/general-discussion/61110-shell-rotella-synthetic-full-analysis.html. Everyone has their own opinions on this topic, and perhaps the best thing to do is look at the research that's been done and make an educated decision. Sorry for the rant, hope this helps someone! Keep the rubber side down.
