Can anyone do the math, for a wheelie-
Say a bike + rider weighs 600 lb.
To lift the front wheel off the ground, you would have to apply about 1500 ft 8) lbs to the rear wheel. (600 lb. centered at 2.5 ft. between axles, that's 1500 ft. lb.)
But obviously that isn't so, because engines don't give that much to the rear wheel, even with torque multiplication.
And more obviously, BIKES DO WHEELIE!
So what am I missing here? 8)

Skill???

Do a search on you tube. I've found numerous wheelie vids with our bike. I can't do it but i know its possible.

Greetings from North AL. :D

Don't forget that you have an induced torque due to the fact that the center of mass is located at a distance above the axis of rotation, the rear axle. This torque is equal to the mass multiplied by the acceleration (F=ma) multiplied by the center of mass distance above the axis. That's why bikes with a high CG are so much easier to wheelie.

Also, there's an initial effect from the front suspension trying to extend that helps get the wheelie started.

I wheelie mine on occasion, just for kicks. It's not the easiest bike in the world to get up, but it's not that difficult. I can do it in 1st with or without the clutch. In second, however, you have to be going about 45 mph and clutch wheelie it. After 2nd gear there is just not enough torque to get the front end up. The easiest way is in 1st gear, get the bike at a steady 4k rpm, cut the throttle so the front end dives a bit, then crack open the throttle quickly right at the moment the suspension begins to rebound.

Just be careful when you drop the front back down because the gas tank is a real nut crusher. :(

Wheelies aren't that hard, the trick is to do a stoppee. I think my new Pirelli's will help.

I hope you're kidding. And if you're not, I'd like to see a vid. A stoppie on a GSX650F would be quite something to see. And not something I envision ever attempting.

The reality is I do mild wheelies. Not something I hold very long. I don't think bringing the rear wheel up a little is a big stretch, in fact I'm pretty confident I've done it...only briefly. Nothing like you see on the show Superbike TV show with Jason doing a real stoppee. Don't short sell our little 650.

I saw that video some time ago. Thanks for the refresher. See, that was a stoppee. The couple I've done I'm sure were a lot milder.javascript:emoticon('') I think stoppee's take more guts then wheelies, of course been do'in wheelies since I started riding in the dirt. I guess it's what ever you get used to.
