Thanks for all the wonderful advice! I think I will try my luck with the GSX650F. Hopefully I will be reporting back with a big smile
It's a great bike, but I must agree that it is not a beginner bike nor is the VStrom really and it has an even higher center of gravity. Just get some good surface road riding in for a while as well as some highway time before you enter the twisty bits. Also I would recommend riding in some groups that are responsible since you can learn a lot from watching other's riding style. Also the whole safety in numbers thing. Just remember this bike can be more than you can handle if you push it in the wrong places (like any bike). I feel weird saying this being that my other primary rider is a 2300cc bike, but it is true. That fact may even give a little more merit to me saying it.
Love my F though and you likely will also.

definitely will be getting the GSX650f after MSF class this weekend. Thanks for all the advice. I was definitely worried about finding the right bike for a guy my height. Since I will get a new one, I will looking into purchasing the frame sliders and finding a good motorcycle club in the Norfolk/Hampton/Newport News/ Virginia area.

ben spies is 6.5 ft and he can ride a r1 so fitting on a gsxf is no problem.
Suzuki gs500 - better economy, cheaper to service and own, cheaper in price , parts are a dime a dozen, centre stand included , better resale value here in Oz anyway, lighter too.
Suzuki gsxf - better performance and handling , easier to ride , does everything perfectly , most importanlty provides a sportier funner ride .
I've got a GS500F and love it as a first bike. I'm already in love with the GSX650F and plan to get one as an "upgrade" either late this season or next year.
the GS500 really is a fantastic starter bike and I'm glad I opted for it over anything else.
Then again, for me, it isn't really about going fast or having the flashiest bike, it's all about the fun and experience.
Though I guess if you are a really big guy, starting with one of these might be a good idea.
