I am considering a can change over this winter but I've heard a few comments on the increased noise level. While I wouldn't mind a little better sound, especially in town, I also like to have a quiet ride on those longer trips. Any suggestions on a route to go? Those that have switched how is the perceived noise level on the highway?
Thanks

I'd like to hear opinions on this too. I want a light, powerful can with low noise. I'm not trying to be heard (I'm getting a 139db horn for that) -- I'd like to lighten weight, boost performance, and get a clean trim look.

What does "great sound" mean to you? Louder, quieter, or just a different tone?

Thanks for the youtube and I've listened to a few of those, but it doesn't give you a very good idea of what the rider hears going at highway speeds.
I don't mind a "throatier" sound in town but at the same time I don't want to have to wear ear plugs going on a road trip either. When I ride with many cruiser bikes I can hear their bike a distance from me when I can't hear my own. It's nice to enjoy the ride and not the noise as well.

Over 45 to 50 mph the sound is not an issue. At highway speeds I can't hear it because of the wind. On twisty roads the sound is perfect you'll be stoked. Around town the cagers will hear you and hopefully see you too.

Hmm, interesting. I'd prefer quieter since my commute often takes me through residential neighborhoods in the wee hours. But I'd make a little sacrifice on that in favor of lower weight and an extra hp or two.

Why not get an exhuast with removable baffle? I once owned a Staintune exhaust (Ozzie brand) which had a baffle you could add or replace within about 20 seconds with an allen key.

Then you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

HP, as usual your suggestions intrigue me! But I am a little newer to this than you are, can you suggest more specifically? A can with a low weight and a performance boost that can be quieted with baffle maintenance would possibly be ideal for me. No idea right now where to obtain such a beast, though.

The Yoshimura has a removable db killer ("flute") but even with it it's somewhat louder than the original muffler.
Two Brothers call their similar implement "P1R Power Tip", looks like that one is a bit more complicated to install.

I think it is a pretty standard feature with aftermarket mufflers nowdays. I just had a quick look on the 2-Bros website (http://www.twobros.com/cgi-bin/shopper?search=action&sku=005-19404&searchstart=0&template=Templates/TBRSearchResult-Simple-Suz-GSX650F-SO-08.html where it had this to say:

Quote:
Specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of performance road bikes, our P1-R PowerTip™ sound suppressor is a recommended accessory for our exhaust systems with M Series outlets using a 2.25” core. A straight-through sound diffuser, the TBR P1-R PowerTip™ quiets the pipe by 2-3 dB with no significant loss of horsepower.

I am sure there are plenty of other exhaust brands in the U.S. who provide similar baffles for their exhausts.

By the way, for those who don't know, decibels are a logarithmic unit, so in general, a noise that is 80db actually sounds 3 times louder than one that is 90db. Its useful to know this when you are looking at exhaust noise stats. 2 to 3 decibels is a significant amount...unless they are lying about their figures

I always used to ride with my baffle in coz I wanted the power but the noise drove me crazy.

Perhaps someone who actually owns one of these exhausts would care to comment?

EDIT: oops, looks like some_finn managed to hit the submit button before me

I have the Two Brothers on my GSX650F and IMO it is perfect. It is quite a bit louder that the stock pipe but at highway speeds that is not noticable only when you're rolling thru the city and you get that great echo off the buildings.

Also, if you want a Two Brothers pipe but with near stock noice, I would get the PowerTip suppressor.

actually, i have the 2bros aluminum can with the powertip installed. it really doesn't make a difference IMO. from the back, it looks kinda cool, but there is not a noticeable difference between installed and removed as far as sound goes. i wanted something to suppress the noise as well because i often leave for work at a little after 4am and i don't want to wake anyone up in my development...so far i haven't heard any complaints, but on the other hand, no one said anything before the powertip was installed. not really worth the $30 i paid for it.
